Competition

 The 'Kaleidoscope of Stars' festival competition is a major attraction for dancers who wish to promote themselves, express a variety of styles on the big stage in front of a supportive crowd and receive a highly structured feedback from international master instructors on up to 10 criteria. Dancers will also receive video clips of their performances 

 


Categories 

This year there will be seven categories for the competition: 

1) Amateurs SoloClassical Oriental- (adults 18+ or 17+waiver)

2) Golden Middle Solo Classical Oriental- (adults 35+)

3) Male Solo-(adults 18+ or 17+waiver)

4) Amateurs Solo Folkloric- (adults 18+ or 17+waiver)

5) Belly Dance Fusion Solo(adults 18+ or 17+waiver)

6) Groups-(adults 18+ or 17+waiver)

7) Professional Solo-Improvisation, Classical, Folkloric (adults 18+) 

 

Amateurs Solo Classical Oriental 

Qualifying improvisational round(number of participant more than 30):


This will be an improvisational dance to a short piece of music chosen by the organizers, (classicalinstrumental pieces with various Arabic rhythms): all participants in small groups of 6-8 dancers to music piece up to 1 min plus 30 sec solo for each participant alone

- No props allowed (veil, canes etc) 

You will be judged on 4 criteria on a 10-point scale: 

  • Costume and grooming presentation

(Please, note that you will not be judged at how expensive your costume is - just how well it fits with your act)

  • Technique
  • Improvisational skills
  • Overall impact 

Semi-final (number of participant more than 18):

- Music of participants choice edited up to 1 minute in total
- No props allowed (veils, canes etc)

 You will be judged on 4 criteria on a 10-point scale: 

  • Costume and grooming presentation
  • Technique
  • Musicality, theme and interpretation
  • Overall impact 

Final:

- Music chosen by the participant up to 3 minutes in total (must be classical oriental)
-Classic "mergence" (an opening piecewhich can include short folkloric sections or entrances with accessories)
- Arabic classical music or song, for example: Um Kalsoum, Warda, Abd el-Halim Hafez, Farid el Atrash, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, etc.
- No music in 'pop' and 'techno' arrangement allowed in this category

- Props are permitted (veils, canes, zills etc) 

You will be judged on 10 criteria on a 10-point system: 

  • Costume and grooming presentation
  • Manner/style
  • Performance skills
  • Musical interpretation (including phrasing, understanding of Arabic rhythms)
  • Performance quality and aesthetics
  • Technique of Raks Sharqi
  • Appropriate dance style
  • Choreography
  • Individuality
  • Overall impact  

Golden Middle Solo & Male Solo

- Music chosen by the participant up to 3 minutes in total (must be classical oriental)
-Classic "mergence" (an opening piecewhich can include short folkloric sections or entrances with accessories)
- Arabic classical music or song, for example: Um Kalsoum, Warda, Abd el-Halim Hafez, Farid el Atrash, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, etc.
- No music in 'pop' and 'techno' arrangement allowed in this category

Amateurs Solo - Folkloric 

This category includes various styles:

- Egyptian folklore(Saidi, Iskanderani, Siwa, Nubian, Semsemeya, Bambooti, Shaabi, Fallahi, Gawazi, Beledi, Haggala) 

- Turkish folklore (Romany, Zeybek, Trakya, Kasik Oyunlari (Spoon Dance), Karsilama, Halay, Horon, Lezginka (Caucasian Dances)

- Folklore of Persian Gulf countries (Khaleegy, Iraqi, Bandari)


- Folklore of Maghreb countries (dances of Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco)


-Permitted use of accessories and items related to folkloric style
- Permitted use of decorations which should be placed on stage by a participants or a representative of his/her team in no more than 15 seconds

Semi-final (if number of participant more than 18):

- Music of participants choice edited up to 1 minute in total
- No props allowed (veils, canes etc

A participant will be judged on 4 criteria on a 10-point scale: 

  • Costume and grooming presentation (appropriate to the style chosen)
  • Technique
  • Musicality, theme and interpretation

Final: 

- Music chosen by the participant up to 3 minutes in total

A participant will be judged on 10 criteria on a 10-point system: 

  • Costume and grooming presentation (relevant to the folkloric style)
  • Manner/style
  • Performance skills
  • Musical interpretation (including phrasing, understanding of rhythms)
  • Performance quality and aesthetics
  • Technique of the chosen folkloric style
  • Appropriate dance style
  • Choreography
  • Individuality
  • Overall impact

 Belly Dance Fusion Solo 

- Music chosen by the participant up to 3 minutes in total (oriental mixed with any music permitted but the oriental input into your dance style should be an obvious 50% or more to qualify for this discipline)

- Permitted use of any accessories or props
- Permitted use of decorations which should be placed on stage by a participants or a representative of his/her team in no more than 15 seconds

- Originality is encouraged (unusual costumes, mixing of different dance styles and themes in the subject)


A participant will be judged on 6 criteria on a 10-point system: 

  • Image
  • Performance skills
  • Technique
  • Originality of idea
  • Choreography
  • Individuality
  •  

Solo Professionals 

Conducted in three mandatory rounds. Points for all rounds added up for the final score 

Improvisational round 

This will be an improvisational dance to a short piece of music up to 1 min chosen by the organizer
- No props allowed (veil, canes etc) 

You will be judged on 4 criteria on a 10-point scale: 

  • Costume and grooming presentation

Classical Oriental 

-Music chosen by participant up to 5 minutes in total (must be classical Oriental style)

 This category includes:

  • Performance quality and aesthetics
  • Technique of the chosen folkloric style
  • Appropriate dance style
  • Choreography
  • Individuality
  • Overall impact 

Groups: 

- Music chosen by participant up to 4 minutes in total (any oriental or folkloric style of music is permitted) 

-Props are permitted (veils, canes, zills etc)
-Permitted use of decorations which should be placed on stage by a participants or a representative of his/her team in no more than 15 seconds

-The choreography should include at least 5 changes in pattern
-Desirable performance in the same costumes or similar in style for the entire groupwill bejudged on 10 criteria on a 10-point system: 

  • Costume and grooming (relevant to the folkloric style danced)
  • Performance skills
  • Musical interpretation (including phrasing, understanding of rhythms)
  • Synchrony
  • Choreography
  • Patterns
  • Originality
  • Level of complexity
  • Overall impression 

Prizes: 

The dancer/group with the highest number of points wins. Each participant's' score with the points awarded by each criteria will be published on the organizers' website shortly after the competition. 

Each participant will receive a participation certificate. 

The winner (1st, 2nd & 3rd place) gets an award/certificate, a title and a prize. And in addition the winner in professional soloist category receives

- the chance to appear in Gala-show

- an Invitation to teach at our next 'Kaleidoscope of Stars' Fest
